The value of having end-of-life doulas in your care providing system is real. Doulas increase patient encounters, improve patient and family outcomes and thus CAHPS scores, supports informed consent, lowers cost and use of aggressive end-of-life treatments creating better quality of life through the dying process and makes your organization more desirable for people looking for support. Furthermore, doulas do not take away from the already established roles of Nurses, Chaplains, Social Workers, they in fact, decrease workforce burnout and support better person-centered outcomes.
Over the past ten years we have trained 10,000+ end-of-life doulas in 56 countries, as well as built relationships with hospices, care provider facilities, clinicians, medical schools, and hospital systems. From this experience, we have gleaned insight and learned wisdom on effective ways to implement a staff and presence of end-of-life doulas. Part of our vision as a non-profit organization is to emphasize the need for doulas at all levels of care: Community, Individual Care Facilities, and Larger Hospital Systems.
LEARNING OBJECTIVE
The main questions we hear from clinicians, administrators and volunteer coordinators are: What is an end-of-life doula? And how do we integrate them when we already have staff and volunteers? In this three hour workshop, we will give you a step-by-step scalable process to successfully implement end-of-life doulas in your organization. Learners will walk away with:
- Understanding of services and value provided by end-of-life doulas
- Alternative naming conventions for doulas to increase patient usage
- Vetted approaches to integrating doulas in scalable ways, small to large
- Ways to fiscally and continuously maintain a doula workforce
- ROI and cost-benefit analysis of why doulas always make sense
- Confidence to improve the care offered through the use of EOLDs

EDUCATORS
Our growing team of educators draws from decades of work as end-of-life doulas. Their insights and stories from the bedside capture the essence of doula work and inspire attendees to walk with them on the same path. They also have extensive backgrounds in trauma-informed care, nursing, social work, spiritual care, grief, the healing arts, adult education, and hospice administration. Every one of them has also completed or is engaged in, our doula certification process.
