INELDA | NEDA Town Hall – Rites and Rights: Legal Considerations for End-of-Life Doulas

International End-of-Life Doula Association (INELDA) and the National End-of-Life Doula Alliance (NEDA) co-hosted this Town Hall.

Listen in for a conversation with the legal team that is at the forefront of defending end-of-life doulas practices. Hear first hand from the attorneys who took on the cases of Full Circle of Living and Dying and Lauren Richwine. Ben Field and Christian Lansinger from the Institute for Justice will share their knowledge around recent legal challenges threatening rights to free speech and to earn an honest living.

Panelist Bios:

Angelyn C. Frazer-Giles has over 25 years’ experience in movement and coalition building; human rights policy; racial and criminal justice advocacy; and project management & program development. She is the Director of Governance Networks & Innovation at BoardSource where she focuses on creating and renewing BoardSource tools and programs to strengthen board leaderships. In addition, she helps identify and create relationships with networks and audiences around the country, to amplify BoardSource’s messaging and governance philosophy.

Angelyn is a trained end-of-life doula and founder and CEO of Heirloom Estate and Legacy Preservation LLC, a firm that provides consultation, webinars and tools designed to educate individuals about the elements of end-of-life planning.

Angelyn received her A.A.S degree from the Fashion Institute of Technology; her B.A. from the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies at the University of Washington; studied Spanish at the Universidad De Guadalajara in Jalisco, México and received her paralegal and estate planning certificates from The Center for Legal Studies. Angelyn has traveled extensively including Honduras–the homeland of her parents. She is also a licensed instructor of Zumba®, Zumba Gold®, Zumba Sentao™ and Aqua Zumba®. She lives in Delaware with her husband.

Ashley Johnson, NEDA President, is a dedicated professional with a passion for ensuring compassionate and informed end-of-life care for all. As an alumna of the University of Florida and a licensed direct disposer and celebrant. Her journey began in a low socio-economic neighborhood, where she witnessed the need for advocacy and support in navigating these sensitive moments.  With over a decade of experience spanning from forensic anthropology to whole-body donation, Ashley founded Loyal Hands, an end-of-life doula consulting agency. Loyal Hands is dedicated to providing education, services, resources, and companionship to agencies, the elderly, and even those in good health, recognizing that everyone has an end-of-life journey to navigate.

Ashley’s commitment to the industry extends beyond her consultancy. She actively engages with various organizations, including memberships in the Cremation Association of North America (CANA),  NHPCO Diversity Advisory Council, and the PsychArmor Working Group.In addition to her professional endeavors, Ashley is deeply involved in her local community. She volunteers at several hospices and non-profit organizations, and she serves as the event director for the “Get Your Rear in Gear” 5k run/walk event for the Colon Cancer Coalition, demonstrating her commitment to public health and awareness.

Her educational background also includes a Non-Profit Management Certificate from the University of Central Florida, highlighting her commitment to effective nonprofit leadership.As a member of the Compassion & Choices African American Leadership Council and a TEDx speaker, Ashley amplifies her voice to advocate for improved end-of-life care, diversity, and inclusivity in the field. Ben Field is an attorney at the Institute for Justice. He litigates cases on free speech, economic liberty, property rights, and educational choice in federal and state courts across the country. Ben’s work has a particular focus on First Amendment retaliation cases and vindicating the rights of Americans who face arbitrary or pretextual actions from executive officials seeking to silence their speech.

Before joining IJ, Ben was a member of the appellate group at Hogan Lovells US LLP, where his practice focused on the U.S. Supreme Court and the federal courts of appeals. Ben clerked for Judge Diarmuid F. O’Scannlain of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and Judge Kent A. Jordan of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit.

Ben received his law degree from Yale Law School in 2015, and an A.B. in economics from the University of Chicago in 2010.

Christian Lansinger is a Litigation Fellow at the Institute for Justice. He returns after working as a semester clerk at IJ’s headquarters office.

Prior to joining IJ in 2022, Christian interned for a small health care law firm in Virginia. There, he witnessed firsthand the difficulties that health care providers face when confronted with protectionist certificate-of-need (CON) legislation.

Christian earned his law degree from William & Mary Law School and his bachelor’s degree from Gettysburg College. While in law school, he served as Chief Justice of the William & Mary Moot Court Team, winning multiple moot court competitions and leading the team to a #2 national ranking. Christian was a member of the William & Mary Law Review.

Christian is a member of the bar in Maryland.
