MAiD: A Personal Story of Family, Policy and Commitment to Care
WEBINAR GUEST(s):
Thalia DeWolf, RN | RN and Hospice Outreach Coordinator and Director of Nursing Education at the Academy of Aid in Dying Medicine
Janine Cuthbertson | INELDA’s membership coordinator, hospice volunteer and INELDA-trained End-of-Life Doula
MODERATOR:
Douglas Simpson | INELDA Executive Director and board member of Academy of Aid in Dying Medicine
Medical Aid in Dying (MAiD) is an end-of-life option where a physician prescribes medication to a competent adult with a terminal illness who wishes to end their life this way. As of January 2025, numerous countries and 11 states in the US have legalized MAiD, recognizing it as a humane way for people with terminal illness to end their lives. This March’s webinar MAiD: A Personal Story of Family, Policy and Commitment to Care will feature Thalia DeWolf, RN and INELDA’s membership coordinator, Janine Cuthbertson as they recount the inspiring story of Janine’s mother’s end-of-life journey with Medical Aid in Dying under Thalia’s supervision.
From Janine’s mother’s decision to use MAiD, to Janine’s fearful realization that no medical professionals were allowed by the hospice to be present, to their brave decision to connect with Thalia to seek the help that they needed, we will set the stage for the great acts of courage and advocacy that followed. We will explore Thalia’s reasons for going against the hospice’s rules and the decision to remain with the patient and family, the reasons Thalia lost their nursing license because of those actions, and their subsequent appeal to an ethics board to challenge what they believed to be inhumane policies.
This webinar will be a powerful look into the ways that MAiD helps people with terminal illness transition, the ways that fear complicates grief, how deathcare practitioners can be the best advocates for their patients and circles of care, and how laws that don’t protect the most vulnerable are meant to be challenged. We hope you will join us to hear this deeply moving story, and to learn about how end-of-life doulas can practice this courageous care for our patients and their circles of care.
INELDA executive director Douglas Simpson will moderate this conversation, guiding attendees through this engaging conversation.

We welcome those actively serving in the role of doula—whether new to providing direct doula support or in the field for years. This group is offered to INELDA-trained or certified doulas with a current Tier 2 or 3 membership. If the membership creates a barrier to access, please email [email protected] to discuss options.

ABOUT THIS CLASS: Pathways to Practice is a six-week cohort-style led course to help empower you with the skills to build your unique doula practice and model of care. We have intentionally shifted away from the language of “business development” because the spectrum of doula care is vast and incorporates many ways to provide service beyond just the traditional business model. We will take learners through a discovery process of envisioning how they want to be a doula and be compensated for their care. We will guide you through trusted strategies for building a “plan for practice” that will help establish your vision for care, your definition of doula care, your impact, and the financial resources needed to sustain your practice. Lastly, participants will hear from a variety of practicing end-of-life doulas as they share their models for inspiration of paths already carved.

This April’s webinar Communication Skills Lab: Role-Playing Difficult Dialogues will be an active role playing workshop to improve your doula skills!
Compassionate Coaching founder, Erin Whalen and two members of her team, role player Elizabeth Jernigan will act out scenarios that you may have experienced supporting the dying. If you have a scenario that you hope to learn from, bring your story, and workshop the situation with this professional actor/role-player. This will give you the opportunity to recreate and practice alternative outcomes. Utilize the tools of Playback Theater to become confident in your approach when supporting others at end of life. Come experience this professional team that trains medical staff around the country to handle difficult conversations and scenarios. Don’t have a scenario, come learn by watching others.
This webinar will be a powerful look into the ways that MAiD helps people transition, the ways that fear complicates grief, how deathcare professionals can be the best advocates for their patients and circles of care, and how laws that don’t protect the most vulnerable are meant to be challenged by those who care for them.

INELDA’s Peer Mentoring groups provide mutual support and community sharing. We come together monthly for an hour-and-a-half conversation to explore the current needs you are experiencing with the people you support. During mentoring sessions, participants will have the option to join groups for general doula discussion and with community doulas who are a part of black, Indigenous, persons of color, or those who identify as part of the LGBTQIA2S+ community.
We welcome those actively serving in the role of doula—whether new to providing direct doula support or in the field for years. This group is offered to INELDA-trained or certified doulas with a current Tier 2 or 3 membership. If the membership creates a barrier to access, please email [email protected] to discuss options.
