“There are many things that drew me into the deathcare space. While personal loss experiences, serious illness, and a culture of death anxiety all played a role, it was my years as a photo editor that finally allowed me to cross over to working in the space. Looking at the global scale of death daily, it was easy to dedicate my energies toward the human connection. As doulas, we can be available for anyone confronting a sudden, traumatic, prepared, or even planned death. It is in this very human space where I strive to bring choice and access to all. I strongly believe that when possible, communication and planning for death can allow for clarity for medical teams and families, as well as prevent intergenerational pain.”
Loren is a volunteer youth grief facilitator through Imagine Newark and hospice volunteer at Villa Marie Claire. Her commitment to community and the environment has led her to work in multiple nonprofits focusing on waterfront access, food policy, transportation safety, and affordable housing. Her work as a news photographer drove her into production and photo editing for over 20 years with national magazines and corporate clients. She holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology and photography from Marlboro College and a master’s degree in environmental urban planning from Pratt Institute.
