Our May 2023 webinar featured a conversation about end-of-life support in rural communities. Populations living in these areas often encounter barriers to access due to distance of services, financial limitations, health literacy, and stigma. We talked about outreach to two rural communities with Andrea Arnett, director of volunteer services at Community Hospice in Ashland, Kentucky and Elizabeth Johnson, executive director of the Peaceful Presence Project in Bend, Oregon.

Hear from Andrea and Elizabeth and how they work with area communities to address the gaps to accessible end-of-life care. INELDA educator, Wilka Roig, moderates this engaging conversation that explores the challenges and opportunities of deathcare in rural environments and the outreach and interventions by these two organizations.

Speaker Bios:

Andrea Arnett is an experienced end-of-life professional who wants to “change the way the world does dying.”  She has served as the volunteer director for Community Hospice for six years and is an INELDA-trained end-of-life doulas. She has years of experience facilitating trainings on end-of-life care and compassionate communication in the hospice setting. Andrea is a certified volunteer administrator and has over ten years of experience working in rural communities in Eastern Kentucky.  She is passionate about serving her community and feels that so many could benefit from end-of-life care if they weren’t afraid to say the word “hospice.”

Elizabeth Johnson is the executive director of The Peaceful Presence Project. She is a NEDA-proficient end-of-life doula and trained with the University of Vermont Larner School of Medicine, A Sacred Passing and INELDA. With a Master’s degree in Community Planning and Not-for-Profit Management, Elizabeth’s travels have taken her around the globe. One of her formative experiences included working as a volunteer at Kalighat, a Kolkata-based hospice for the sick, destitute and the dying established by Mother Teresa. For 2 years Elizabeth served as a board member for the NEDA, serving on their Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee. She is a graduate of the 2-year ‘Anamcara Project’ apprenticeship program, with a focus on the spirituality of grief and loss. She is a certified advance care planning educator for the Institute on HealthCare Directives, a certified pregnancy loss group facilitator, and a member of the Coalition to Transform Advanced Illness Care.
