In 2000, end-of-life therapist and founder of the Shared Crossing Project, William Peters was volunteering at the Zen Hospice Project in San Francisco when he had an extraordinary experience as he was reading aloud to a patient: he suddenly felt himself floating in midair, completely out of his body. The patient, who was also aloft, looked at him and smiled. The next moment, Peters felt himself return to his body…but the patient never regained consciousness and died.

Over the past 23 years, William has researched thousands of people who have had similar experiences through his organization the Shared Crossing Project and its research initiative. Today the project offers trainings for both interested learners and health care professions, concierge medical support, and counseling. His 2022 book, At Heaven’s Door: What Shared Journeys to the Afterlife Teach About Dying Well and Living Better, documented these stories across the globe.

Moderated by INELDA educator, Lara Stewart-Panko. Together they explore William’s personal experiences and those he has gathered over decades. Learn about the Shared Crossing Research Initiative (SCRI) and the work they do towards improving end-of-life experiences.
