Since 1996, November has been designated as a time to honor the sacrifices of the military and veteran community. In recognition of their sacrifices, this month we will be joined by two Army veterans, Eddie Taylor, PhD, and Qwynn Galloway-Salazar, PhD, called to the space of providing care to their fellow service members and veterans, and their families. We know the military and veteran community is a multifaceted population with a unique culture. As more and more end-of-life doulas are serving veterans, we want to ensure you have the strategies to do it well. To bring our cultural humility to the bedside, we must understand their military experiences and how those experiences may impact the end-of-life journey. Join us for this heartfelt and engaging conversation to learn how we can honor the fallen and uplift the living in our veteran community.

Qwynn Galloway-Salazar, PhD, is a behavioral health and end-of-life professional with a strong passion for serving those who served. Most recently, Qwynn served as the codirector for SAMHSA’s Service Members, Veterans, and their Families Technical Assistance (SMVF TA) Center at Policy Research Associates, Inc. (PRA). In her role, she co-led the day-to-day operations of the SMVF TA Center, providing guidance on technical assistance tasks, developing tools and resources, collaborating with federal partners, and providing technical assistance to states, territories, and local communities working to strengthen their behavioral health systems for SMVF. During that time, she played a significant role in designing and coordinating the Governor’s and Mayor’s Challenge to Prevent Suicide Among Service Members, Veterans, and their Families Policy and the Implementation Academy model. This vital initiative has aided states in developing strategic action plans and implementation plans to help reduce suicide amongst the military and veteran population. As a result, there has been a total of 35 states and 18 communities that have accepted the challenge!
Qwynn is an Army veteran, spouse to a retired combat veteran currently serving in law enforcement, and a mom. She brings to the field a combination of 20 years of military and professional experience, providing her with the knowledge and abilities to support the needs of the military and veteran population. Her background serving the military and veteran population also includes working in federal and state agencies, the military, and academia.
She recently took on a passion project, becoming an end-of-life doula specializing in veteran care. Qwynn also partners with end-of-life professionals and consults on topics related to the needs of veterans and their families facing end-of-life challenges. She volunteers with hospice, serving veterans and their caregivers. Additionally, she serves on the board of directors for the American Association of Suicidology and the Advisory Board of the Veterans Studies Association. These roles allow her the opportunity to pour into students and scholars around the world who are studying topics near and dear to her heart!
Qwynn has a doctoral degree in industrial and organizational psychology with a specialty in forensic consulting, a master of arts degree in professional counseling, and a bachelor of science in criminal justice.
