To be queer is to exist in intimate proximity to death and the infinite possibilities for end-of-life afforded by queerness. Surviving each day in a world that wishes you dead demands charisma, uniqueness, nerve, and talent. The adaptations made by queer folks in this life can help guide us all into the next with the same ferocity and creativity.

In this webinar, end-of-life doulas Tasha Fierce and Zena Sharman will be in dialogue on the complexities and opportunities afforded by dying queerly. From the AIDS pandemic to the rise of anti-LGBTQIA+ fascism today, attendees will be invited to learn from diverse queer community histories and practices around death, dying and grief as sites of collective care, political resistance, and social transformation.

Joining as a special guest is INELDA board member, David Copeland. INELDA Director of Communications and Partnerships, Loren Talbot will moderates the conversation, guiding our guests and attendees to explore how the topics raised can further support doula practices and transform delivery of care models.

Zena Sharman, PhD is a writer, speaker, strategist and LGBTQ+ health advocate. She’s the author of three books, including The Care We Dream Of: Liberatory and Transformative Approaches to LGBTQ+ Health and the Lambda Literary award-winning anthology The Remedy: Queer and Trans Voices on Health and Health Care. Zena is a death doula and hospice volunteer who authored a six-part series of articles on Queering Death for Xtra Magazine. David Copeland (he/him/his) is from Cincinnati. The founder of Live Without Regrets doula services, he is a part of the LGBTQIA2S+ community and has been serving the sick and dying for many years. An INELDA-trained end-of-life doula and board member, David is also certified through the International Association of Professions Career College and is a licensed missionary reverend in the Love Church.

His work as a doula is to serve the LGBTQIA2S+, elderly, terminally ill, dying, and their loved ones with dignity, grace, and love. He does this through creating a tailored end-of-life plan, respite care, vigil and legacy projects, bereavement, and post death consultations. It is an honor and a privilege for him to be allowed into one of the most intimate and sacred parts of life. As a death doula, he is committed to his clients and their families with trust and integrity as core values of advocacy.
