How we respond to loss can look different for each person navigating their grief. When Charlene Lam’s mother died suddenly in 2013, she leaned into her creativity and instincts as a curator to guide herself through this period. At the time, she was working as an independent curator in London, producing exhibitions featuring the work of designers, makers, and artists. As she cleaned out her mother’s home and belongings, she asked herself, “If I were to curate an exhibition about my mother, which 100 objects would I choose?”. This profound question inspired an exploration of these objects and the meaning they held. A little over a year later, Charlene held an exhibition featuring her mother’s objects in London.

Objects hold deep importance, and whether sacred or profane, the things we carry can be powerful vehicles for awareness, understanding, and connection. Art offers us a way to contextualize a life and establishes a connection between the person who has died and the grieving. During our time together, we discovered how each of us can be curators and work through grief by bringing meaning through the inherent life that lives within the objects that remain after someone dies.

Anyone can use the lens of curating, whether your loss was recent or years ago, and whether or not you have any belongings from the person who has died. You don’t need to be an artist or consider yourself creative!

Attendees were invited to bring a meaningful object that belonged to a loved one—or a story or image about an object.

INELDA’s director of education Omni Kitts Ferrara invites you to explore how art can support our grief journeys and how curating a collection of objects can create a space to explore loss and letting go.
